Emory University is an independent research university situated in Atlanta, Georgia, US. Founded in 1836 under the name "Emory College" by the Methodist Episcopal Church and named in memory the memory of Methodist bishop John Emory. Emory is the second-oldest private college that offers higher education located in Georgia (after Mercer University, established by the same name in 1833).
Emory University has nine academic divisions: Emory College of Arts and Sciences, Oxford College, Goizueta Business School, Laney Graduate School, School of Law, School of Medicine, Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing, Rollins School of Public Health, and the Candler School of Theology. Emory University is part of the Georgia Institute of Technology, and Peking University in Beijing, China, collaborate to manage the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering.
