Wake Forest University History
At the Baptist State Convention of 1833 in the Cartledge Creek Baptist Church in Rockingham, North Carolina, the creation of Wake Forest Institute was approved. The school was established following it was announced that the North Carolina Baptist State Convention bought an area of 615 acres (2.49 kilometers 2.) farm in 1833 from Calvin Jones in an area north of Raleigh (Wake County) named"the "Forest of Wake". The school, which was designed to educate both Baptist laymen and ministers, began its operation on February 3, 1834 known as it was known as the Wake Forest Manual Labor Institute. Staff and students were required to work for half of the day performing manual labor in the plantation. Samuel Wait, a Baptist minister, was chosen as the chief, and later president of the institute.
