The University of King's College London (KCL) is a London-based public research university. King's received its first royal charter (as a university college) from King George IV and Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington in 1829 (though the medical school at King's, St. Thomas, dates back to the 16th century, with the first recorded teaching in 1561). One of England's oldest universities is King's. King's was one of the two founding colleges of the University of London in 1836. In the late twentieth century, King's expanded by combining Chelsea College of Science and Technology and Queen Elizabeth College (in 1985), the Institute of Psychiatry (in 1997), the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals, and the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery (in 1998).
