The University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass Amherst, UMass) is a research-oriented public university located in Amherst, Massachusetts, and the only land-grant public University in Massachusetts. Established in 1863, it was originally an agricultural college. It is now the most prestigious and largest campus of the University of Massachusetts system and the first set. It is also part of the Five College Consortium and four other colleges located in the Pioneer Valley: Amherst College, Smith College, Mount Holyoke College, and Hampshire College.
