University of Glasgow History

The University of Glasgow was established in 1451 by a papal bull or charter given by Pope Nicholas V at the request of King James II, granting authority to Bishop William Turnbull, a graduate of the University of St Andrews, to establish a university in St Andrews' Cathedral. It is the second oldest university in Scotland, behind St Andrews, and the fourth oldest in the English-speaking world. Scotland has three universities: St Andrews, Glasgow, and Aberdeen are ecclesiastical foundations, while Edinburgh is a public foundation. Glasgow University is one of the eight universities in the United Kingdom to issue undergraduate master's degrees in certain areas. It is one of the oldest institutions in Scotland.

University of Glasgow Campus
