The University of Glasgow was established in 1451 by a papal bull or charter given by Pope Nicholas V at the request of King James II, granting authority to Bishop William Turnbull, a graduate of the University of St Andrews, to establish a university in St Andrews' Cathedral. It is the second oldest university in Scotland, behind St Andrews, and the fourth oldest in the English-speaking world. Scotland has three universities: St Andrews, Glasgow, and Aberdeen are ecclesiastical foundations, while Edinburgh is a public foundation.
