The University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley, Berkeley, Cal, or California) is a public land-grant research university in Berkeley, California. Established in 1868 as the University of California, it is the state's first land-grant university and the first campus of the University of California system. University of California, Berkeley Campus
Berkeley campus covers approximately 1,232 acres (499ha), but the "central campus" only occupies the western 178 acres (72ha) of this area. The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory occupies 200 acres (81 ha) of the remaining acres. Other facilities include the Lawrence Hall of Science, several research units, and the Space Sciences Laboratory. There is also a University of California Botanical Garden, a recreational center in Strawberry Canyon, and an 800-acre ecological preserve (320 ha). Parts of the undeveloped eastern portion of the campus lie within the City of Oakland. These portions stretch from the Claremont Resort north to the Panoramic Hill neighborhood and Tilden Park.
The downtown Berkeley business district is located to the west of the campus. To the northwest, the neighborhood of North Berkeley includes the Gourmet Ghetto. This commercial area is known for its high-quality dining, with such well-known restaurants as Chez Panisse. Northside, a quiet residential area with a large number of graduate students is located immediately to the north. The Berkeley Hills are north and the more upscale neighborhoods of the Berkeley Hills are just north. Southeast of campus is fraternity row, and beyond that is the Clark Kerr Campus. Claremont is an upscale residential neighborhood. South of the university is student housing. Telegraph Avenue is one of Berkeley's most popular shopping areas with street vendors, restaurants, and shops catering to tourists and college students. The university also owns land northwest of the main campus. This includes a 90-acre (36 ha), married student housing complex in Albany ("Albany Village") and a field station in Richmond, California. In the Valley Life Sciences Building's lobby, you will find the Museum of Paleontology. It displays a range of dinosaur fossils, including the complete cast of a Tyrannosaurus Rex. There are many resources available on campus for innovation and entrepreneurship such as SkyDeck and the Sutardja Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology. The University of California Botanical Garden is located on the campus. This plant collection, which has more than 12,000 species, is one of the largest in the United States.
University of California, Berkeley Architecture
The 1898 "International Competition for Phoebe Hearst Architecture Plan for the University of California '' was held in Antwerp. It was founded by William Randolph Hearst's mom. Eleven finalists were selected and then the task was given to John Galen Howard, an architecture professor. Howard designed more than twenty buildings that set the standard for campus expansions in the 1950s, 1960s, and later on. The "classical core" of campus buildings were constructed in the Beaux-Arts Classical design style. These include Hearst Greek Theater and Hearst Memorial Mining Building. Howard's designs are often listed on the National Register of Historic Places as California Historical Landmarks. South Hall was built in 1873 and is the oldest university in California. University of California, Berkeley Natural features
Two branches of Strawberry Creek flow into the main campus. The south fork flows into a culvert downstream of Strawberry Canyon's recreational complex. It then passes under California Memorial Stadium before returning to Faculty Glade. The fork then runs through campus' center before disappearing underground at its west end. The north fork runs east from University House, through the valley north of Valley Life Sciences Building, and then disappears underground at the west end of campus. It is the same area that was home to the Campus Arboretum's original site. Many wooded areas are found on campus, including Founders Rock, Faculty Glade and Grinnell Natural Area. Also, the Eucalyptus Grove is the highest stand of hardwood trees in North America and directly runs through California Memorial Stadium.
