The Southern Cross University's National Marine Science Centre is situated in Coffs Harbour. Coffs Harbour campus. The branches located in Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney are operated in collaboration with EduCo. In addition, the Hotel School Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne are run by the university, in collaboration with Mulpha Australia.

Southern Cross University offers degrees that are in collaboration in collaboration with Papua New Guinea and China. The 1970s were the time when Southern Cross University was just an Teachers College with 151 students. It was referred to by the name of Lismore Teachers College then. In 1973, it changed its name in 1973 to Northern Rivers College of Advanced Education. The college grew in the 1990s before becoming an institution with a distinct individual identity in 1994. First Vice-Chancellor at Southern Cross University was Professor Barry Conyngham. The university had around 95 international students been enrolled as of 1995.

The year 2008 saw eight top organizations from Northern Rivers had come together to form The SNR (Sustain Northern Rivers) collaboration. At present there have been three major programs that have been developed by the SNR, including Sustain food, Sustain Transport, and Sustain Energy. Southern Cross University got the highest rating of 'well above standards in six research areas. There are many research and academic programs available at Southern Cross University. The undergraduate and postgraduate courses are organized into six schools, two colleges, and two research centers. The university has School of Health and Human Sciences, School of Education, School of Arts and Social Sciences, School of Environment, Science and Engineering, School of Business and Tourism, School of Law and Justice, SCU College, Centre for Peace and Social Justice, National Marine Science Centre along with Gnibi College of Indigenous Australian Peoples.
