Princeton University is a private Ivy League research university in Princeton, New Jersey. Princeton University, founded in 1746 in Elizabeth as the College of New Jersey, is the fourth-oldest institution of higher learning in the United States and one of the nine colonial institutions chartered prior to the American Revolution. The institution relocated to Newark in 1747, and subsequently to its current location nine years later. It became a university in 1896 and was christened to Princeton University.
Princeton operates on a residential college system and is well-known for its upperclassmen dining clubs. There are around 500 student organizations at the campus. Princeton students value a diverse range of traditions from the past and the present. The university is an NCAA Division I member of the Ivy League. The Princeton Tigers, the school's sporting team, has won the most conference championships and has sent numerous students and alumni to the Olympics.

Princeton University Campus
The main campus in Princeton, New Jersey, consists of over 200 buildings spread across 600 acres (2.4 km2). The James Forrestal Campus, a smaller facility established primarily as a research and instruction complex, is divided between Plainsboro and South Brunswick. The campuses are about an hour's train ride from both New York City and Philadelphia. The university also owns more than 520 acres (2.1 km2) of land in West Windsor Township, where Princeton plans to build a graduate student housing complex called as "Lake Campus North."
Princeton University Research
Princeton is one of the "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very High Research Activity" universities. According to data for the 2020 fiscal year, the university received approximately $250 million in sponsored research for its main campus, with 81.4 percent coming from the government, 12.1 percent coming from foundations, 5.5 percent coming from industry, and 1.0 percent coming from private and other sources. The Plasma Physics Lab received an extra $120 million in sponsored research, bringing the total sponsored research for the main campus and the lab to $370 million. According to 2017 data, the university ranks 72nd out of 902 universities in terms of research spending.
According to 2018 data, Princeton's National Academy Membership reached 126, placing ninth in the country. There are 75 research institutes and centres on campus, as well as two national laboratories. Princeton participates in the New Jersey Space Grant Consortium.
