Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) is a public technical university that was established through the Indian government of India located in Kharagpur, West Bengal, India. It was established in 1951. The institute was the first IIT to be established and recognized to be one of the Institute of National Importance. In the year 2019, it was granted the status of an Institute of Eminence by the Government of India.The institute was first established to provide engineers with training after India gained Independence in 1947. IIT Kharagpur History
A year later, in 1946, there was a commission headed by Sir Jogendra Singh, a Member of the executive council of the Viceroy, was formed to look at the possibility of establishing advanced technical universities "for the post-war industrial development in India". The next step was the formation of a 22-member panel led by Nalini Ranjan Sarkar.
