Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) is a public technical university that was established through the Indian government of India located in Kharagpur, West Bengal, India. IIT Kharagpur History

A year later, in 1946, there was a commission headed by Sir Jogendra Singh, a Member of the executive council of the Viceroy, was formed to look at the possibility of establishing advanced technical universities "for the post-war industrial development in India". The next step was the formation of a 22-member panel led by Nalini Ranjan Sarkar. First, the Indian Institute of Technology was created in May 1950 and was named The Eastern High Technical Institute.It was situated in Esplanade East in Calcutta but was later in September 1950, it was moved to its present campus in Hijli, Kharagpur, 120 kilometers south-west of Kolkata (formerly named Calcutta). Hijli was utilized as a detention facility during the time that was under British administration in India, which was the place in which Indian freedom fighters were held.

IIT Kharagpur is situated 120 kilometers (75 miles) to the west of Kolkata. The campus is 5 km away from Kharagpur Railway Station in the West Midnapore district.
