Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) is a public technical institution situated within Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India. It was designated one of the Institute of National Importance by the Government of India under the Institutes of Technology Act.In 1959, it was established to be one of the first Indian Institutes of Technology. IIT Kanpur Campus
IIT Kanpur is located on the Grand Trunk Road, 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) to the west to the west of Kanpur City, and measures close to the size of 420 Hectares (1,000 acres). The land was given to the Government of Uttar Pradesh in 1960, and by the month of March 1963, the institution was moved to its current location. The institute is home to about 6478 students including the enrollment of 3938 undergraduate students, 2540 postgraduates and 500 research assistants.
Noida Extension Center
IIT Kanpur is to open an extension center in Noida with the aim to create a smaller convention center in the area to help with activities for outreach. The foundation was laid on the 4th of December 2012 on five acres of land that was allocated to the Uttar Pradesh state government in the sector-62 area of Noida city located less than an hour's drive away far from New Delhi and the Indira Gandhi International Airport. The cost of the construction is estimated at around 25 million dollars. This new facility will include an auditorium, seminar rooms to host international and national conferences, and the International Relations Office, along with an eight-story guest house. Helicopter Service
Being an industrial city of major importance, Kanpur has good connectivity both by road and rail but is not as well in regards to air connectivity. IIT Kanpur was suffering significantly when compared with IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay because of this when it comes to visiting dignitaries and other companies are concerned. On June 1, 2013, an air-based ferry service was launched from IIT Kanpur run by Pawan Hans Helicopters Limited. The initial service links IIT Kanpur to Lucknow, but the plan is to extend it later up to New Delhi. At present, there are two daily flights between and to Lucknow Airport with a duration of about 25 minutes. Lucknow Airport operates both international and domestic flights to major cities. IIT Kanpur is the first educational institution in the country to offer this service. The cost is estimated to be the equivalent of Rs. 6000 (US$100) per person. If someone would want to avail this service they must contact the Student Placement Office (SPO) at IIT Kanpur since the helicopter service is dependent on the availability of helicopter rights. There are also airstrips on the campus that permit flight training and joyride rides for students.
IIT Kanpur Placements 2021
The institute has established an entirely separate branch, "The Students' Placement Office" which is the sole authority in IIT Kanpur placements (SPO). According to reports in the media that a total of 1062 offers were made as of Day 8 of Phase 1 of IIT Kanpur places 2021-22 of which 885 were accepted. Additionally, IIT Kanpur has received 47 offers from international universities. The amount of PPOs that were offered and accepted in for this year's academic session was 207 and 156, respectively. The top International and domestic packages accepted for Phase 1 IIT Kanpur placements 2021-22 are INR 2.8 crore per year or INR 1.2 crore annually in both cases. IIT Kanpur Scholarships

The campus spans an area which is 4.3 sq km (1,100 acres). The facilities include one of them, the National Wind Tunnel Facility. Other major research centers are The Advanced Centre for Material Science as well as a Bio-technology research center and The Advanced Center for Electronic Systems and the Samtel Center for Display Technology, Center for Mechatronics, Center for Laser Technology, Prabhu Goel Research Center for Computer and Internet Security, Facility for Ecological and Analytical Testing. The institute also has its own airfield to test flight, as well as gliding.PK Kelkar Library (formerly Central Library) is an academic library at the institute that houses an extensive collection of over 300,000 volumes and subscriptions to more than 1000 periodicals. The library was named to its current title in 2003, after the late Dr. P K Kelkar, the founder of the institute. It is located in a 3-story building and has a floor space of 6973 square meters. There are Abstracting of and Indexing journals, Microform, and CD-ROM databases Technical reports, Standards and thesis are part of the library. Each year, approximately 4500 volumes of journals and books add to the library.The New Core Labs (NCL) is a three-story building that houses high-tech laboratory facilities for chemistry and physics classes in the first year of. This New Core Labs also has Linux and Windows computers for the classes in the first year, as well as the Mathematics department lab, which houses powerful computers.
IIT Kanpur History
IIT Kanpur was established by an Act of Parliament in 1959. The institute was founded in December of 1959 in an area in the canteen of Harcourt Butler Technological Institute. The Campus was developed by Achyut Kavinde, a modernist style.The first 10 years that it was in existence, it was a consortium comprised of nine US universities (namely MIT, UCB, California Institute of Technology, Princeton University, Carnegie Institute of Technology, University of Michigan, Ohio State University, Case Institute of Technology and Purdue University) helped set the IIT Kanpur's research labs as well as academic programs within the Kanpur Indo-American Programme (KIAP). The initial director at the Institute was P. K. Kelkar (after whom the Central Library was renamed in 2002). Under the direction of the economist John Kenneth Galbraith, IIT Kanpur was the first university in India to provide Computer science education. The initial computer classes were initiated within IIT Kanpur in August 1963 using the IBM 1620 system. The concept of computer education was a result of the Electrical Engineering department, which was then headed by Professor. H.K. Kesavan was the chair of Electrical Engineering and head of the Computer Center. Professor. Harry Huskey of the University of California, Berkeley, prior to Kesavan, assisted with the computer program within IIT-Kanpur.In 1971 the IIT started an independent academic program with a focus on Computer Science and Engineering that led towards MTech as well as PhD degrees. In 1972, the KIAP program was ended due to tensions resulting from tensions over the U.S. support of Pakistan. Also, the government cut its funding in response to the perception that IITs contributed to brain drain.
