The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (also known as IITR) is a public technical university in Roorkee, Haridwar district, Uttarakhand, India, led by Director Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi. Previously, it was known as the University of Roorkee (1949–2001) and the Thomason College of Civil Engineering (1847–1949). It is Asia's oldest technical institution, founded in 1847 in British India by the then-lieutenant governor, Sir James Thomason. It was granted university status in 1949 and was designated as an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in 2001, making it the ninth IIT to be established. IIT Roorkee includes 22 academic departments that offer programmes in Engineering, Applied Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Management, with a strong emphasis on scientific and technology education and research.
IIT Roorkee History
The institution grew out of a class formed in 1845 to train local students in engineering to help with public works projects that were just getting begun. It was formally formed in 1847. In 1854, it was renamed the Thomason College of Civil Engineering in honour of its founder, James Thomason, lieutenant governor from 1843 to 1853. Rai Bahadur Kanhaiya Lal was the first Indian to graduate from Roorkee College in 1852.
The Department of Civil Engineering was founded in 1847 and is India's oldest engineering department. Thomson College's Electrical Engineering department was founded in 1897, making it one of the world's first such specialisations. In 1969–70, the architecture department was the first in India to provide a master's degree course in architecture (M. Arch.).
