The Institution of British Columbia (UBC) is a public research university in Kelowna, British Columbia, with campuses near Vancouver. UBC is British Columbia's oldest university, having been founded in 1908. The university is ranked among the top three in Canada. UBC sponsors almost 8,000 projects each year with an annual research budget of $759 million. The Vancouver campus is next to the University Endowment Lands, which are about 10 kilometers (6 miles) west of downtown Vancouver. UBC is home to TRIUMF, Canada's national particle and nuclear physics facility, which houses the world's biggest cyclotron. Along with the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies and the Stewart Blusson Quantum Matter Institute, UBC and the Max Planck Society developed the first Max Planck Institute in North America, focusing on quantum materials. The UBC Library system, one of Canada's major research libraries, contains approximately 9.9 million books spread throughout its 21 locations. The Okanagan campus, which was bought in 2005, is in Kelowna, British Columbia.

University of British Columbia History

Six years after British Columbia joined Canada, the Superintendent of Education, John Jessop, proposed the establishment of a provincial university in 1877. In 1890, the provincial government enacted An Act Respecting the Campus of British Columbia, but debates emerged about whether the university should be built on Vancouver Island or on the mainland.

University of British Columbia Recent History

On July 1, 1971, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau announced the establishment of the Museum of Anthropology at UBC. The museum building, designed by Arthur Erickson, cost $2.5 million to build and opened in 1976. Under the guidance of Sally Rogow, the university developed a normal school program the same year to train educators on how to teach kids with various impairments or who were visually impaired. Professor Santa J. Ono is UBC's 15th president. On August 15, 2016, he was inaugurated as President of the United States. He previously served as the University of Cincinnati's 28th president. Dr. Martha Piper, the university's 11th president, served as temporary president from September 1, 2015, until June 30, 2016, following Dr. Arvind Gupta's departure.
