University of Auckland

The Institution of Auckland is a New Zealand public research university based in Auckland. It is New Zealand's largest, most comprehensive, and highest-ranked school, routinely ranking among the top 100 schools in the QS World University Rankings. The institution was established in 1883 as a University of New Zealand affiliated college. It was initially located in an abandoned courthouse. With roughly 4000 students spread across five Auckland campuses, the Institution of Auckland is now New Zealand's largest university in terms of enrolment. The bulk of students and faculty are located in Auckland's City Campus, which is located in the Auckland CBD. It houses eight faculties, including a law school, as well as three connected research institutions.

History of the University of Auckland

The University of Auckland was founded on May 23, 1883, as part of the University of New Zealand. Auckland University College was the name at the time. John Chapman Andrew was in charge of the university's administration throughout its early years (Vice Chancellor of the University of New Zealand 1885-1903). Prior to the 1930s, when there was a surge in interest in academic research during the Great Depression, it was not regarded a research-oriented university. After John Beaglehole's contentious dismissal (supposedly for a letter to an American newspaper in which he was vehement about the right to print communist literature), the college's administrative council issued a variety of resolutions to foster academic freedom, which aided the institution's development. It was also the year when the University of New Zealand closed its doors for the last time in 1961. In 1961, the University of Auckland was given legal authority by legislation known as the University of Auckland Act 1961. On the 24th of March, 1970, Queen Elizabeth II formally opened the magnificent new School of Medicine Building in Grafton. In 2002, the Queen established the Liggins Institute.
