It's no secret that the United States is one of the most expensive countries in which to pursue higher education, but don't let that deter you; there are hundreds of ways to get money for your studies here.

As an international student, you will not be eligible for money reserved for US citizens. However, as colleges in the United States pursue internationalization, the number of international scholarships to study in the United States has increased. Some US colleges also provide need-blind admission to overseas students.

Below is a list of US scholarships for international students, some of which are supported by the US government, some by private groups, and still others by individual schools. Best wishes with your applications!

Government-Funded US Scholarships for International Students

Fulbright Foreign Student Program:- One of the most well-known government-funded US scholarships for overseas students, Fulbright provides scholarships for graduate students, young professionals, and artists to study in the United States for one year or more. International students from all areas are welcome, with the exception of medicine.

Hubert Humphrey Fellowship Program:- This is a non-degree fellowship programme for foreign, experienced professionals who want to spend 10 months studying in the United States. Despite the fact that the financing does not support degree certificates, students can study and expand their knowledge at academic institutions around the country.

Non-Governmental US Scholarships for International Students

#YouAreWelcomeHere Scholarship – Awarded to all international students studying any subject at a participating college or university in the United States (of which there are 57). You must submit an essay or a video demonstrating your interest in promoting intercultural learning and exchange. (The deadline for Fall 2019 entry has passed; applications for the 2020 round will open in May 2019).

Awards for Civil Society Leadership – Scholarships are available for students from eligible countries to study at the master's level in the United States or another host country.

Shapiro, David P. Autism Scholarship – A $1,000 scholarship is available to current or prospective students in the United States who have been diagnosed with autism.

Preply Scholarship - Three applicants will receive up to $2,000 in prize money. Open to all students (domestic and international, of any study level) between the ages of 16 and 35. To enter, you must write a 500-word essay about online education, multilingualism, or professional development.

Surfshark Privacy and Security Scholarship - A high school, undergraduate, or graduate student currently enrolled in the United States or another study destination can win a $2,000 prize. You must submit an essay to be considered for the scholarship, which is open to people of all nationalities.

Tortuga Backpacks Study Abroad Scholarship – Given twice a year to deserving international students who want to study in the United States. Priced at $1,000 USD.

Especially For Asian students:

Scholarships and Fellowships from the East-West Center – Scholarships to study in the United States at selected institutions for international students from the Asia-Pacific region.

Friendship Commission of Japan and the United States – This commission, a joint initiative of Japan and the United States, provides grant programmes for Japanese students wishing to study in the United States (and vice versa).

Wesleyan Freeman Asian Scholarship Program – Scholarships for 11 outstanding Asian students to study at Wesleyan University in Connecticut in the United States. Tuition and student fees are fully covered.

Especially For Australian students:

The Fulbright Program - The Australian-American Fulbright Commission provides scholarships to Australian citizens at all stages of their careers. Awardees participate in an academic and cultural exchange, conducting research or studying at a U.S. institution, living abroad, and bringing back knowledge and experience to share with their communities in Australia.

Especially For Female Students: 

AAUW International Fellowships – The American Association of University Women (AAUW) International Fellowships are given to women who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States for full-time study or research in the United States. The annual amount is $18,000 USD.

Game of Bat and Ball Women's Sports Scholarship – A $1,000 scholarship awarded to a woman pursuing a sports-related degree at any university in the United States.

MIT-Zaragoza Women in Logistics and Supply Chain Management Scholarship – US scholarships for female students of any age, ethnicity, or nationality to study at MIT's Zaragoza Logistics Center. ZLC will award one scholarship worth €24,000 that covers half of the tuition for the MIT-Zaragoza Master of Engineering in Logistics and Supply Chain Management (ZLOG) programme.

Especially For Graduate Students:

Rotary Peace Fellowships – Master's degree students studying at one of Rotary's Peace Centers in the United States are eligible for scholarships (such as at Duke University or the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill). The Rotary Foundation offers up to 50 master's degree fellowships and 80 certificate fellowships at prestigious universities.

Especially for Students from Developing Countries:

Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarship Programme – Scholarships for postgraduate international students from African countries are available through the Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarship Programme.

Scholarships from the MasterCard Foundation – Scholarships for African students to study in the United States and Africa.

University-Specific Scholarships for International Students

American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship – Bachelor's scholarships to study at American University in Washington, DC, in the United States. This scholarship is for international students who have demonstrated leadership potential.

Brandeis University Wien International Scholarship Program – A funding opportunity for high-achieving students who are interested in contributing to the student community.

International Awards at Illinois State University – Illinois State University offers incoming international students tuition waivers, merit awards, and graduate assistantships.

International Merit Scholarships at Iowa State University – A merit-based scholarship programme for high-achieving international students.

International Scholarships at Michigan State University – MSU offers a variety of grants and scholarships to international students who wish to study in the United States.

New York University Wagner International Scholarships – Scholarships to study at the New York University Wagner Graduate School of Public Service in the United States.

International Scholarships at the University of Arkansas – Funding opportunities for international students of various backgrounds and nationalities.

Clark University Global Scholars Program – First-year international applicants can apply for a scholarship worth at least $10,000 as well as a $2,500 taxable stipend for a paid internship.

Emory University Needs-Based Scholarship Program – Emory University offers financial assistance to international students. As part of the Emory University Scholar Programs, Emory University offers partial to full merit-based scholarships. But Financial needs must be demonstrated by students.

Harvard University Scholarships – Harvard University offers a number of (extremely competitive) international scholarships to students from around the world.

Scholarships for International First-Year Students at the University of Iowa – A variety of scholarships are available for international students starting their first year in the fall of 2017.

International Scholarships at the University of Minnesota – Offers a Global Excellence Scholarship as well as the #YouAreWelcomeHere Scholarship, which is a renewable $15,000 per year scholarship.

International Scholarships at the University of Oregon – International students can apply for scholarships to study at the University of Oregon in the United States.

University of Wisconsin Superior Non-Resident Tuition Waiver Program – Tuition exemption for foreign students at the University of Wisconsin who demonstrate financial need.
