History

The university was founded in 1891, when Woolwich Polytechnic, the UK's second oldest polytechnic [6], opened its doors in Woolwich. It was formed by Frank Did den and opened to pupils in October 1891, with Quintin Hogg's backing and beliefs. It began by combining education with social and religious activities, much like Hogg's pioneering endeavour on London's Regent Street.

In 1894, it shifted its focus to an educational role, focusing on higher technical education, which was appropriate given its proximity to the Royal Arsenal and Woolwich Dockyard; the General Secretary of the Ordnance Factories was William Anderson, a board member and later a member of the board of Governors. The Woolwich Polytechnic School was founded in 1897, and the site was also utilized for day schools.

Thames Polytechnic was founded in 1970 when Woolwich Polytechnic and a portion of Fulham College of Art and Building amalgamated to become Thames Polytechnic. Dartford College (1976), Avery Hill Institute (1985), Garnett College (1987), and sections of Goldsmiths College and City of London College (1988) were all absorbed in the years that followed.

The Major administration gave Thames Polytechnic (together with many other polytechnics) university status in 1992, and the institution was renamed the University of Greenwich in 1993. The Thames College of Health Care Studies, which was formed via the amalgamation of three local nursing and midwifery schools, formally amalgamated with the newly named University of Greenwich on January 1, 1993, and became a full faculty of the university.

In 1996, the Natural Resources Institute (NRI), originally a UK government research body, was absorbed into the university.

The university moved from its original main location in Woolwich's Bathway Quarter to its present main campus in Greenwich in 2001.
