Wayne State University is a top urban research and education institution that is situated in the center of Detroit. It was founded by the state in 1868.Wayne State is home to a large and diverse group of more than two thousand students with a variety of over 350 educational programs.

History

The first part of the present Wayne State University was established in 1868 under the name of The Detroit College of Medicine. In 1885 it was announced that the Detroit College of Medicine merged with its counterpart and that of the Michigan College of Medicine and they combined their the buildings. In 1913, the college was reorganized as it was renamed the Detroit College of Medicine and Surgery which was later transferred under the care by the Detroit Board of Education. They are now rebranded in the Wayne State University School of Medicine.

Academics

Wayne State's main campuss is spread over 250 acres within Detroit's Midtown neighborhood, and is home to the campus's more than 100 facilities comprising 11.7 million square feet of gross area. Its School of Medicine campus is located near Detroit Medical Center. Detroit Medical Center while TechTown is Wayne State's 12-block 43-acre technology, research and research park, is situated next to the campus' main one. Additionally, six student residence halls and apartment complexes accommodate more than 3,100 students.
