Northeastern University History

Northeastern University, founded in 1898, is a global research university and a recognised leader in experience-based lifelong learning. Our world-renowned experiential method enables our students, faculty, alumni, and partners to make a difference that transcends field, degree, and campus boundaries.

Northeastern University Campus

The main campus of Northeastern University is situated on 73 acres (30 ha) primarily along Huntington Avenue and Columbus Avenue in the Fenway Cultural District, which is part of Boston's Fenway and Roxbury neighbourhood, near the Museum of Fine Arts, Symphony Hall, New England Conservatory, and Christian Science Center.

Despite its central Boston location, Northeastern has a large quantity of green open space and quads. Northeastern has been regarded as an example of urban university architecture since the late 1990s, winning the American Institute of Architects' "Most Beautiful New or Renovated Exterior Space" award in 2001 and 2004. ArbNet certified the campus as an arboretum in 2019, making it the only campus in Boston to get the classification.

The Huntington Avenue Grounds, which is now part of the university, hosted the first baseball World Series. A statue of Cy Young stands in front of Churchill Hall to commemorate the site.

Northeastern University announced a Public Art Initiative in 2014 to install a number of vibrant murals and other works of art throughout the Boston campus. French artist Jef Aérosol, Houston-born artist Daniel Anguilu, Los Angeles-based El Mac, and Charleston, South Carolina-born artist Shepard Fairey, best known for his 2008 Barack Obama "Hope" poster, are among those whose work has been commissioned.

Northeastern University Research

Faculty and students are encouraged to put their results into products, services, materials, tests, and tools within the university. Their Center for Research Innovation paves the way for identifying, patenting, and exploiting commercially viable inventions. IDEA, their entrepreneurial accelerator, provides mentorship, in-kind resources, and seed capital to aspiring entrepreneurs.

Northeastern University Library

The Snell Library and the John D. O'Bryant African-American Institute Library are two of Northeastern University's libraries. The NU School of Law Library is managed independently from the rest of the NU School of Law.

The Snell Library, which cost $35 million to build, opened in 1990 and houses 1.3 million books. Students can research or study at any time because the main library is open 24 hours a day. The library's Digital Media Design Studio is a collaborative and multidisciplinary learning environment where students can create multimedia presentations, projects, and portfolios for their classes.

The Favat Collection, a contemporary collection of children's literature and K-12 curriculum resources, instructional materials, and associated information to assist the School of Education's courses, is housed in the library. NU Information Services has three computer laboratories on campus. One is a teaching lab that is open to all NU students, teachers, and staff.

The Benjamin LaGuer papers collection is housed in the Northeastern University Archives and Special Collections department, which is located in the Snell Library. The Special Collections are primarily focused with the records of community-based groups in the Boston region that are concerned with social justice problems.

In 1963, the NU Libraries were designated as a federal repository. The Libraries receive 45 percent of the federal publishing series available to depository libraries as a selected depository.

The library staff implemented an open-access policy in June 2016 to make the professional research of its members freely available online.
