The University of St Andrews (Scots: University o St Andras; Scottish Gaelic: Oilthigh Chill Rimhinn; shortened to St And in post-nominals from the Latin Sancti Andreae) is a private university in St Andrews, Fife, Scotland. It is one of Scotland's oldest institutions, and it is the third-oldest English university after Oxford and Cambridge. When Avignon antipope Benedict XIII issued a papal bull to a tiny segment of the Augustinian clergy in 1413, St Andrews was founded. St Andrews was a part of the Scottish Enlightenment in the 18th century, along with other universities such as Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Aberdeen.
