The Universite de Montreal (UdeM; French pronunciation: [yniveRsited@ moReal]; which translates into the University of Montreal) is a public research university in French located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The campus of the University is situated on the northern ridge of Mount Royal in the neighborhoods of Outremont and Cote-des-Neiges. The University has thirteen faculties, over sixty departments, and two associated schools: Polytechnique Montreal (School of Engineering and Technology; previously known as The Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal) and the HEC Montreal (School of Business). It has greater than 650 bachelor courses and graduate programs, including 71 doctoral programs. The University was established as an affiliated campus of Universite Laval in the year 1878. It was made an independent university following the issuance of a pope's charter in 1919, as well as an official provincial charter in the year 1920. Universite de Montreal moved from Montreal's Quartier Latin to its present place on Mount Royal in 1942. It was converted to an institution that is secular following the passage of a province charter, which was passed at the time of 1967. The college is co-educational and has 34,335 undergraduates as well as 11,925 postgraduate pupils (excluding the affiliated institutions). University de Montreal Campus
The main campus of the University is situated on the northern ridge of Mount Royal, located in the Outremont and Cote-des-Neiges boroughs. Its iconic Pavilion Roger-Gaudry (named after the th8e former Rector Roger Gaudry)--known up to 2003 as the Pavillon principal--is visible from within the campus and is famous for its impressive tower. It was constructed primarily with its Art Deco style with some elements that are of an International style. It was constructed by the renowned designer Ernest Cormier. On September 14, 1954, it was announced that a Roll of Honour plaque on the wall to the top of the stairs leading to the Court of Honour in Roger-Gaudry Pavillon was dedicated to former students from the college who lost their lives during their service in the Canadian military during the Second World War. In November of 1963, a commemorative plaque was installed in the memory of the students from the Universite of Montreal that was during the Armed Forces during the First and Second World Wars and Korea. The J.-Armand-Bombardier Incubator is one of the buildings built jointly by the Universite of Montreal as well as Polytechnique Montreal. It is situated on the main campus at Universite de Montreal and was constructed in the fall of 2004 with the intention to assist startups that are heavily invested in R&D by offering complete infrastructures in optimal conditions. The atmosphere encourages collaboration between academics and industries and encourages Quebec's entrepreneurial spirit. Since its inception, The Incubator hosts more than 15 companies, mostly in the biomedical area and in the area of surface treatment and polymer, optics and photonics (like Photon etc.) as well as within IT security (like ESET).
The Centre Hospitalier de Universite de Montreal (CHUM) and the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Sainte-Justine are the two teaching hospital networks of the Universite de Montreal's Faculty of Medicine, although the latter is also affiliated with other medical institutions such as the Institut Universitaire de geriatrie de Montreal, Montreal Heart Institute, Hospital Sacre-Coeur and Hospital Maisonneuve-Rosemont. A memorial plaque to the staff of CHUM's "Hopital General Canadien No. 6 (Universite Laval de Montreal)" from 1916 until 1920 was given from Mr. Louis de Gonzague Beaubien , who died in 1939.
University de Montreal Facilities off campus
In addition to the primary Mont-Royal campus school also has five regional facilities located in Terrebonne, Laval, Longueuil, Saint-Hyacinthe and Mauricie. University de Montreal Campus MIL
The Master Plan of the University of Montreal includes the development of new institutions within the city of Outremont, Montreal. The campus is accessible via two Metro stations (Outremont in addition to Acadie) will have research and teaching spaces. The campus is constructed according to LEED eco-certification. More recently, the groups asserted that the opening of the campus had led to the eviction rate increase significantly and rental rates in Parc-Extension. Three researchers from Montreal universities which include McGill University, Concordia University and the University of Quebec in Montreal, have implemented their Parc-Extension anti-eviction map in the year 2019 in conjunction with CAPE.A report detailing the growing gentrification of Parc-Extension was released in June of 2020 through the Parc-Extension anti-eviction mapping project as well as the CAPE. The authors concluded that the median rent for two-bedroom apartments between February to May 2020 was nearly twice as high as the estimates provided from CAPE in October 2019. University de Montreal Academics
It is Universite de Montreal is a public research university that is it is a member of the association of universities and colleges of Canada. Undergraduate students comprise most of the university population, comprising 74% of the student body at the University and graduate students make up 24 percent of the overall student body. University de Montreal Student life
The two major Unions for students are: two: the Federation des associations etudiantes du campus de l'Universite de Montreal (FAECUM), which is the representative for all full-time undergraduate and graduate students, as well as the Association Etudiante de la Maitrise et du Doctorat de HEC Montreal (AEMD) is a group that is a defender of the rights of students who are enrolled at HEC Montreal. FAECUM is a descendent of the AEMD. Its roots went to 1989 when they formed the Federation etudiante Universitaire du Quebec (FEUQ) was formed in 1989, and is the biggest student group in Quebec. Clubs and associations that are accredited on campus are able to cover a wide variety of interests that range from academics to culture, social, religion and other issues. University de Montreal Sports
The Montreal sports teams of the Universite are commonly referred to as the Carabins. The Carabins are part of the U Sports' Reseau du sport etudiant du Quebec (RSEQ) conference that covers most high school sports. Varsity teams comprise badminton, rugby, Canadian football, cheerleading and hockey, golf, alpine skiing, swimming, tennis, soccer, track and field cross-country and volleyball. The athletics department at the University was established in 1922. The facilities for athletics at the University are accessible to both students as well as its varsity teams. The biggest sporting center is the Centre for Education and Physical Fitness du sport de Universite Montreal (CEPSUM), which houses all the Carabin's varsity teams.
