The University of Queensland (UQ) is a public research university principally based in Brisbane, the capital city of the Australian state of Queensland. UQ was founded in 1909 by the Queensland government and is one of the six sandstone universities, an informal title for the state's oldest institution. The Australian Research Council placed the University of Queensland second nationally in their most recent research evaluation and joint second in Australia based on the average of four central worldwide university league tables. The University of Queensland is a founding member of edX, Australia's leading Group of Eight, and the internationally renowned Association of Pacific Rim Universities. The main St Lucia campus takes up a large portion of the riverbank inner neighborhood of St Lucia, southwest of Brisbane's central business area. Other UQ campuses and facilities may be found around Queensland, with the Gatton campus and the Mayne Medical School being the largest. UQ's international presence includes the UQ North America office in Washington, D.C., and the UQ-Ochsner Clinical School in Louisiana, USA. The university has a college, a graduate school, and six faculties that offer associate, bachelor, master, doctoral, and further doctorate degrees.UQ is home to over a hundred research institutes and centers that provide research programs, including the Institute for Molecular Bioscience, Boeing Research and Technology Australia Centre, Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology, and UQ Dow Centre for Sustainable Engineering Innovation. The university's recent important research includes pioneering the discovery of the HPV vaccination, which prevents cervical cancer, producing a COVID-19 vaccine that is currently in human trials, and inventing high-performance superconducting MRI magnets for portable scanning of human limbs.

The University of Queensland History
The University of Queensland was established by a State Parliament Act in 1909 and was officially formed on April 16, 1910, with the gazettal of appointees to the first UQ Senate. Teaching began in 1911 in the Old Government House on George Street in Brisbane. There were three faculties – Arts, Science, and Engineering – and 83 students in the first year.
The University of Queensland Campuses and Facilities
The University of Queensland maintains a number of campuses and facilities throughout Queensland. UQ has its main campus in the suburb of St Lucia in Brisbane, bordered by a meander in the Brisbane River to the north, east, and south. UQ's main campus has been recognized for its beauty by a number of sources. Its other campuses include Gatton and Herston.
St Lucia Campus
The Brisbane City Council reclaimed the land on which the St Lucia campus is constructed in 1927, using money provided by James O'Neil Mayne and his sister Mary Emelia Mayne to replace the less spacious city campus. The Gardens Point campus of the Queensland University of Technology presently occupies the city campus. The construction of St Lucia's new university began in 1937.
Great Court Campus
The Renowned Court, a 2.5-hectare (6.2-acre) open space surrounded by Helidon sandstone structures with grotesques of excellent academics and historic scenes, floral and faunal patterns, and crests of universities and colleges from throughout the world, lies at its heart. This central semi-circular quadrangle has a linked arcade, allowing students to reach any area under shade. In 2002, the Great Court was listed to the Queensland Heritage Register.
Museums Campus
The University of Queensland Art Museum is located on the St Lucia campus in the James and Mary Emelia Mayne Centre. The Art Museum was founded in 1976 in the Forgan Smith Tower to hold artworks gathered by The University of Queensland since the 1940s, and it relocated to its current location in 2004. The University's Art Collection is now Queensland's second-biggest public art collection, with over 4,400 artworks.
In the Michie building (bldg 9, level 2), the university also houses the R.D. Milns Antiquities Museum, which holds Queensland's sole publicly accessible collection of antiquities from ancient Rome, Greece, Egypt, and the Near East. The museum contributes to academic research and education. The UQ Anthropology Museum (located on floor 1 of the Michie Building) houses a major collection of ethnographic items. It is also accessible to the general public.
Gatton Campus
The UQ Gatton Campus is located at Lawes, in Gatton, Queensland, some 90 kilometres (56 miles) west of Brisbane on the Warrego Highway. The campus was established in 1897 near to the site of the Queensland Agricultural College, which merged with UQ in 1990. UQ Gatton is the central campus for the agricultural, animal, veterinary science, and environmental research, learning, and teaching. The Centre for Advanced Animal Science (CAAS) was established on the Gatton campus in 2008 as a joint venture between UQ and the Queensland Government.
Herston Campus
The primary location for clinical health education and research is UQ Mayne Medical School and the Queensland Institute of Medical Research. The Herston campus is part of the Queensland Health system, which includes the Royal Brisbane Hospital, Royal Children's Hospital, Royal Women's Hospital, and the Queensland Institute of Medical Research. The Faculty of Medicine, the School of Population Health, the Herston Health Sciences Library, the Centre for Clinical Research, and the clinical research and learning activities of the School of Nursing and Midwifery are all housed there. Other important facilities on the Herston site include the Oral Health Centre and the purpose-built Herston Imaging Research Facility. In 1999, the medical school building was placed on the Queensland Heritage Register.
The Marks-Hirschfeld Museum of Medical History is located on the Herston campus of Mayne Medical School. It is run entirely by volunteers and is financed by The University of Queensland Alumni. It houses a collection of over 7,000 medical artifacts and surgical equipment. The collection's concentration is on the study of medical history in Queensland, but it also includes materials with broader value to Australia and the world.
Overseas Clinical Cchools
-
Louisiana, United States of America - The UQ-Ochsner Clinical School is located in Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans and Baton Rouge, and it provides medical students in the UQ-Ochsner program with two years of foreign clinical experience that counts toward their UQ Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree.
Ipswich Campus
UQ sold the Ipswich Facility to the University of Southern Queensland in 2014, concluding that USQ would benefit more from this rural teaching campus.
On roughly 25 hectares, the campus housed nearly 20 structures and over 5001 students (62 acres).
Arts, business, medical, and social sciences courses, as well as interaction design, were all available. It is located near central Ipswich, Queensland, just south of the CBD. Limestone Park, Workshops Rail Museum, and RAAF Base Amberley are all nearby attractions.
The Woogaroo Lunatic Asylum's Ipswich branch opened in 1878, and the facility goes back to that year. It remained in operation until 1910 when it was renamed the Ipswich Hospital for the Insane. It was renamed the Ipswich Mental Hospital in 1938 and again in 1964 as the Ipswich Special Hospital. In 1968, it was renamed the Challinor Centre after Henry Challinor, the ship's physician aboard the Fortitude. The Challinor Centre was an institution for persons with intellectual impairments from 1968 to 1997.
