History Saarland University
Saarland University, the first to be established following World War II, was founded in the fall of 1948, with the help of the French government and under the tutelage of the University of Nancy.
In the early years, the Saarland was in a unique situation of being partly autonomous but connected to France by monetary and economic union. By combining the German and French education traditions as well as the dual language that were taught, the school had the advantage of having an European view from the beginning. Before the establishment of the school, medical classes that were offered for students of medicine at the state hospital Saarland University Hospital located situated in Homburg, Saarland, had been established in January 1946. In addition, in January 1946, the "Centre Universitaire d'Etudes Superieures de Hombourg" was established on May 8, 1947, under the supervision by the University of Nancy. Students studying in specific disciplines are able to receive degrees through both schools.
In 1948, the first president at this university that was independent of 1948 was Jean Barriol. The same year, the university started the first classes in philosophy, law, and languages.
