William Marsh Rice University (Rice University) is a private research institution located situated in Houston, Texas. It is located on a campus of 300 acres near the Houston Museum District. Houston Museum District is close to the Medical Center. Opened in 1912 following the murder of the University's founder, William Marsh Rice, Rice is a research institution that focuses on undergraduates. Its focus on education is evident by its smaller student population and the 6:1 student-faculty ratio. Rice University has a large number of research activities which is evident by the $156 million of Research funding from sponsors in the year 2019. The President of Rice, David Leebron, stated "They picked The name Ion because it's derived from the Greek Ienai, which translates to "go". Rice University History

The 18th of May, 1891, the Massachusetts-born commercialist William Marsh Rice chartered the William Marsh Rice Institute for the Advancement of Literature, Science, and Art as an offering to Houston, Texas. Houston in which he earned his fortune. The charter stipulated that work on the new institute starts only after the death of Rice.

Rice University Organization

Rice University is chartered as a non-profit institution and is managed by a privately-appointed Board of trustees. The board is comprised of up to 25 voting members, who serve for four-year terms. The trustees are paid no compensation, and an easy majority of trustees have to reside within Texas with at least four from of the Houston area. The trustees' board can delegate its power by appointing a President to be the chief officer of the University. David W. Leebron was named president in 2004 and was succeeded by Malcolm Gillis, who has served since 1993. Provosts, the six vice-presidents, and other university officials have a report on behalf of the president. The president is supervised by a University Council composed of the provost as well as eight of the Faculty Council, two staff members and one graduate student, along with two undergrad students. The president is the head of the Faculty Council, which has the authority to change curriculum requirements, develop degrees, and approve applicants for degrees.

Students at Rice's undergrad students are benefited by a central admissions procedure, which allows new students to Rice as a whole and not just a specific university (the Schools of Music and Architecture are separated from the rest of the University). A student may later decide that they'd prefer to study in a different field or carry on their current studies and choose a second or even a third. The transitions are intended to be easy at Rice, and students are not being required to choose one specific area of study until the sophomore year of studies.
