The National (Metsovian) Technical University of Athens (NTUA); sometimes known as Athens Polytechnic, is among the most prestigious higher education institutions in Greece and is the most highly regarded engineering schools.
It was established in 1837, as a part-time vocational school called Royal School of Arts which became more prominent as the development of technology in the newly-formed state increased, it became the sole Greek institution that offered engineering degrees until the 1950s in which time polytechnics were set up in the outside of Athens. Its traditional campus, located in the center of Athens on Patision Avenue on a site donated by EleniTositsa, features a suite of magnificent neo-classical buildings by architect LysandrosKaftantzoglou (1811-1885). A brand new campus, the Zografou Campus, was built in the 1980s.
Education
The academic curriculum at NTUA is split into independent academic semesters. Each semester is comparable to 30 units of credit. The courses offered in different Schools run for one semester. In all schools, studies are at least ten (five autumn and 5 spring) semesters. The tenth semester is dedicated for the diploma thesis. Each semester covers an average of 30 credit units and spans 18 weeks. 13 weeks are dedicated to teaching, two for the Easter or Christmas break, and the final 3 weeks of each semester to take the final exams in the semester's classes. In the autumn term, the time following the last exam is handed to vacations or for special educational activities.
Undergraduate studies
Academic calendars of NTUA is comprised of 10 independent semesters, which are integral academic. Each semester is 18 weeks long with 13 weeks of classes with a break of two weeks, as well as three weeks for exams for the semester. Tenth-semester is dedicated to the work of preparing your diploma thesis. The diploma thesis should be connected to a course that the faculties offer. The student is at or her disposal an academic term to complete the thesis. After the thesis is completed students must participate in an examination which could be held in October, June or February following the final exam in the event that the student is able to pass all the classes required by the syllabus.
Postgraduate studies
It is currently offering 20 inter-departmental or departmental postgraduate programs, managed by NTUA Departments. They lead to the Post Graduate Specialization Diploma, with a minimum of 17 months. This includes an MBA Administration(in cooperation with Athens University of Economics and Business). Furthermore, NTUA participates in nine postgraduate programs that are coordinated by other Greek universities. Once the student has earned the Post Graduate Specialization Diploma, students can begin the submission of a dissertation.
Infrastructure of NTUA
There is an library on campus. It is member of the European University Association (EUA) and is also an affiliate of the Conference of European Schools for Advanced Engineering Education and Research (CESAER).
Research and Innovation
The equal and interconnected priorities of NTUA include scientific research and education. The research programmes conducted within the Institution are under the supervision of established academic standards, and are supported with NTUA's own resources. through the General Secretariat for Research and Technology (GSRT) as well as other public entities, through the European Union or by private industry companies in Greece as well as other countries.
As a payment for facilities and services offered (which include equipment, facilities, and other infrastructure), NTUA withholds approximately 15 percent of the research programme budget. By a decision of the Senate the Senate, these sums.

It is the National Technical University of Athens is ranked 338th across the world, 116th within the European Union, and 3rd in Greece according to the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities website. NTUA was placed between 551 to 600 in the QS World University Rankings in 2012, with its rankings for the faculty area as 152nd in Engineering & Technology and 352nd for Natural Sciences respectively. The 2012 performance rankings of scientific papers from world universities, released through the National Taiwan University (NTU Ranking) has rated NTUA as an excellent. NTUA is the top cited Impact Score (0.88) in the Greek universities according to a ranking that was prepared by the Directorate-General for Science and Research of the European Commission in 2003 (updated in 2004) which was released in the Third European Report on Science & Technology Indicators.
