Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) University Campus
MIT's the 166-acre (67.2 square hectare) campus located in Cambridge. The city of Cambridge covers approximately 1 mile along the northern portion of the Charles River basin. The campus is roughly divided into two halves by Massachusetts Avenue, with most student facilities and dormitories on the west side and the bulk of the academic buildings on the east. The bridge that is closest to MIT is the Harvard Bridge, which is well-known for its marking with a non-standard measurement unit of length called that of the smoot. The Kendall/MIT MBTA Red Line station is located at the northeastern end of the campus in Kendall Square. The Cambridge neighborhoods around MIT include a variety of high-tech companies that occupy offices that are modern and renovated industrial structures and also socially diverse residential areas. In the beginning of 2016 MIT presented its latest Kendall Square Initiative to the City of Cambridge which included plans for mixed-use retail, educational and residential space, a startups incubator as well as office space in an extensive high-rise transit-oriented development plan. The MIT Museum will move to the immediate vicinity of the Kendall Square subway entrance, which will be joined by the List Visual Arts Center on the eastern side of the campus.
MIT Architecture
The MIT's School of Architecture, now the School of Architecture and Planning is the first official architect program to be established within the United States, and it is a frequent site for commissioning innovative buildings. The first buildings built within Cambridge campus, which were completed in 1916, are often known as"the "Maclaurin buildings" in honor of Institute President Richard Maclaurin who oversaw their construction. They were designed through William Welles Bosworth. These magnificent buildings were constructed from concrete reinforced, which was a first for a non-industrial or even a university-type construction in the US. Bosworth's design was influenced by his work in the City Beautiful Movement of the early 1900s. It also features the Pantheon-like Great Dome housing the Barker Engineering Library. It's Great Dome overlooks Killian Court which is the place where graduation ceremonies are held each year. The friezes on limestone-clad buildings that surround Killian Court are engraved with the names of famous philosophers and scientists. The huge atrium of Building 7 is located in 7777 Massachusetts Avenue is regarded as the entrance point to the Infinite Corridor as well as other areas of campus.
MIT Housing
Students can stay for four years in one of MIT's eleven student dormitories. Out of eleven dorms, 10 are operational because one of the residence halls, Burton Conner, is undergoing reconstruction from 2020 until 2022. Those who live on campus receive assistance and support from graduate student tutors who live in the halls as well as resident advisors and faculty housemasters. Because the housing assignments are according to the needs of students as well as their preferences for social interaction, diverse atmospheres can be maintained in various living areas, for instance as per The Yale Daily News staff's The Insider's Guide to the Colleges, 2010 "The divide among East Campus and West Campus is an important feature of MIT. East Campus has gained a reputation for being a vibrant counterculture. "MIT also has five dorms for graduate students who are single, and two apartment buildings for married students.
MIT Library services
