Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) is a public technical university that is located within Hauz Khas in South Delhi, Delhi, India. It is among India's oldest Indian Institutes of Technology in India.
The campus was founded in 1961 and officially opened in August of 1961 with the help of Prof. Humayun Kabir, Minister of Scientific Research & Cultural Affairs. The first admissions were granted in 1961. The current campus covers an area of 325 acres (or 1.3 km2) and is bordered by the Sri Aurobindo Marg to the east as well, The Jawaharlal Nehru University Complex on the west as well as the National Council of Educational Research and Training in the south, along with the New Ring Road on the north. It is bordered by Qutub Minar and the Hauz Khas monuments.
This institute later proclaimed as one of the Institutes of National Importance under the Institutes of Technology Amendment Act in 1963. The institute was then granted official status. It was a fully-fledged university with the power to set its academic policies as well as conduct its examinations and confer its degrees.
In 2018, IIT Delhi was also given the status of an Institution of Eminence (IoE) by the Government of India, which granted nearly full autonomy. In a statement issued by the Indian government released earlier, these IoEs will be more autonomous by being allowed to accept international students as high as 30% of their admitted students and hire foreign faculty for up to 25% of their faculty with increased research funding.
IIT Delhi Campus
Main Campus
The primary school of IIT Delhi is located in Hauz Khas, South Delhi as well as Sonipat as well as Jhajjar being the two campuses that are satellites. The campus covers 350 acres (132 acres) and is located within the Hauz Khas area and sites such as that of the Qutub Minar and Lotus Temple.The campus is also near other educational institutions like The Jawaharlal Nehru Institute, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, National Institute of Fashion Technology, National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) and Indian Statistical Institute.
The campus's interior is reminiscent of a city with green spaces, lawns residential complexes, and large roads. The campus has its own water supply and a backup power source and shopping centers for the day-to-day demands of residents.

The student residential zone is comprised of 14 student hostels that are named in honor of the mountains of India. They are divided into two major areas: one of which houses 11 hostels for boys and another one for girls hostels.
Sonipat campus
In 2012, the first announcement of the IITD-Sonipat campus opened in April of 2018 by the Governor of Haryana at the Technopark located in Rajiv Gandhi Education City, Sonipat. The Technopark, of which this campus is a part, was created at the cost of INR175 million (1.75 billion). The campus located in Sonipat is focused on Executive MBA and Faculty Development programs for the technical and engineering colleges in Haryana state and the creation and development of the latest technology to incubate and grow more companies and foster collaboration with industry.
Facilities include research and development labs established by corporates in collaboration with IIT Delhi, business incubators, Impact Lab for Path, a global health innovation center, a top-of-the-line central research facility, a Centre of Excellence in Smart manufacturing, and training centers, and the facilities for conventions. It can house and incubate 100 startups with residential facilities.
Jhajjar campus
IITD-Jhajjar campus is adjacent to AIIMS-Delhi's Jhajjar campus in Badsa village, which is located in the Jhajjar district in Haryana. IIT-Delhi and AIIMS are collaborating to create an institute for biomedical research at this campus, with an integrated Ph.D. supervisory program and the possibility of adjunct faculty. IITD-Jhajjar is financed by IITD and is managed through the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT)

IIT Delhi BTech
The BTech program at IIT Delhi is ranked 2nd within the Engineering category of the NIRF rankings for 2021. It offers a total of 14 specializations as well as 1045 students.
