Carnegie Mellon Institution (CMU) is a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based private research university. The university was founded in 1900 when the Carnegie Institute of Technology and the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research merged. The Carnegie Technical Schools, founded by Andrew Carnegie, became the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1912, and began awarding four-year degrees. The Carnegie Institute of Technology and the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research, which had previously been a part of the University of Pittsburgh, amalgamated in 1967. The university has been run as a single entity since then.

The main campus of Carnegie Mellon is located five miles (8 kilometres) outside downtown Pittsburgh, between Schenley Park and the communities of Squirrel Hill, Shadyside, and Oakland. With a 17 percent acceptance rate, Carnegie Mellon University admissions is the most selective. A SAT score of 1460 to 1560 or an ACT score of 33 to 35 is required for admission to Carnegie Mellon University. However, one-fourth of approved applicants received scores that were higher than these ranges, while the other quarter received scores that were lower.
