Baku State University

Baku State University (BSU) (Azerbaijani: Bak Dövlt Universiteti (BDU)) is an Azerbaijani state university. The University of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was founded in 1919 by the Parliament of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, with faculties of history and philology, physics and mathematics, and law and medicine, with an initial enrolment of 1094 students. V.I.Razumovsky, a former professor of surgery at Kazan University, was the first rector of BSU.

In 1930, the government forced the University to close as part of a higher education reform, and the University was replaced by the Supreme Pedagogical Institute. However, the University was rebuilt in 1934 and continued to operate during the tough years of World War II, despite a faculty shortage.

The University has 13 faculty at its 40th anniversary in 1959. Both the Azerbaijan Medical University and the Azerbaijan State Economic University arose from the founding faculties of BSU. Among the BSU alumni were two former Azerbaijani presidents, Abulfaz Elchibey and Heydar Aliyev. The former attended the Faculty of Arabic Language and Literature, whereas the latter, who controlled Azerbaijan's political life for more than 30 years, attended the Faculty of History. Between 1922 and 1924, Nobel Prize-winning scientist Lev Landau attended BSU.

Baku State University History

The BSU was created on September 1, 1919, by a decree of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic Parliament. The University was founded as a consortium of four faculty (history and philology, physics and mathematics, law, and medicine). V. I. Razumovsky, a well-known surgeon, was the University's first rector.

Azerbaijani writer Abdurrahim bek Haqverdiyev, Orientalist Professor P.K. Juze, Professor A.O. Makovelski, Professor A.O. Mishel, and other intellectuals were among the top teachers in 1920-40. During that time, the university management welcomed to Baku teachers such as N.Y. Marr, V.V. Bartold, and Fuad bek Kuprulluzade, an academician of the Eastern Science Academy.

The institution was closed in 1930 as a result of a restructuring decision made by the Council of the People's Commissar. As a successor, the High Pedagogical Institute was established. The institution reopened in 1934 and quickly became the republic's scientific-pedagogical core. Despite a lack of university lecturers as a result of their participation in World War II, the institution was able to preserve its leadership position. Teachers were instrumental in the establishment of the Azerbaijan Academy of Science in 1945. Baku State University served as the foundation for the bulk of the republic's premier universities, including Azerbaijan Medical University, Azerbaijan University of Economy, Azerbaijan State Pedagogical University, and others.

Following 1969, the years can be regarded an era of greater growth in the direction of knowledge and science. During this time, faculties on current specialities, departments, and around 30 scientific research facilities were established. Under Heydar Aliyev's president, the University continued to grow and flourish, with new specialisations, departments, and scientific laboratories opening. Baku State University has long been a key scientific and educational institution in Azerbaijan, owing to its vast historical past. Heydar Aliyev, Azerbaijan's outstanding leader and a famous scientist, thinker, and politician, graduated from Baku State University. Baku State University has 16 majors, 55 bachelor's degrees, and 153 master's degrees as of May 2021.

The 100th anniversary of Baku State University was celebrated throughout 2019 in Azerbaijan, as well as in Vienna, Austria (September 2019) and at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris (June 2019). In November 2019, the Presidential Decree issued a unique medal in celebration of BSU's 100th anniversary, titled "The 100th jubilee (1919-2019) medal of Baku State University," and 113 persons were later given this Medal.
