After 1991's Gulf War in 1991, the team of Elias Bou Saab from the American Intercontinental University (AIU) visited the Persian Gulf to establish relationships with various ministers of higher education and the schools of the region.
The absence of high-quality educational facilities for students of private at level of universities as well as the growing acceptance for an American system of education inspired them to do a feasibility study about the possibility of establishing the first American University within the Persian Gulf. The findings confirmed the great the desire and enthusiasm for a school that could offer an accredited American educational program.
It became apparent that the Emirate Dubai located within the United Arab Emirates, would be the ideal location to establish such a school. Dubai was discovered to be a stable political international, cosmopolitan and forward-looking state which had a virtually no private sector in higher education was only beginning to attract attention.
Elias Bou Saab moved to Dubai in 1995 to for the establishment of the American University in Dubai, which could not have been made feasible without the support and encouragement from the very beginning from Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Vice President and Premier Minister of the UAE and ruler of Dubai. In the present, he maintains his unwavering support to higher education in general and for the university in particular.

AUD relocated from its original premises to take up the new, large and fully-equipped campus in January. The enrollment at the date was 687.
In 2000, the year was significant due to the fact that it was the year 2000 that the university was granted a license from the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHE).
